Malaysia Shipowners' Association (MASA) is the only national industry organization representing Malaysian shipowners. It is an independent and non-profit organization who play key role in the development of Malaysia shipping industry.
It was established in 1976 with the main objective of protecting and promoting the interest of Malaysian shipowners as well as to assist the government in its efforts to develop a commercially viable and efficient national fleet for both the domestic and international trade.
The affairs of the Association is managed by an Executive Committee (EXCO) while daily affairs is managed by the Executive Secretary and is responsible to the EXCO. MASA has formed six Standing Committee to look after specific areas of the industry. They are as follow:
· Trade Committee
· Seafarer Committee
· Technical Committee
· Finance Committee
· Sabah Committee
· Sarawak Committee
MASA was formed by Ordinary members and over the years, it membership has expanded to other maritime fraternity such as brokers, suppliers, ship classification, marine insurance and etc. As at October 2011, MASA memberships has reached 290 members.
MASA close rapport with the relevant government agencies, such as the Marine Department and the Ministry of Transport (MOT) qualifiy us to be the best co-partner of the industry in raising any issues to the government or vice versa.
MASA carry the responsibility to dissemminate information to members, to be the bridge between the industry and government through forum, seminar, conference and meetings on trade and shipping matters. MASA facilitates MOT on Domestic Shipping Licence (DSL) application as well.
These continuous efforts shall improve the maritime standards and Malaysia will meet the requirements to be the maritime nation.
